Jan Šafránek, The Observer, Galerie Gema, 2026

The intimate exhibition Pozorovatel / The Observer presents the artist as a sensitive and perceptive observer of everyday life. Through the use of precise, traditional painting techniques, he captures seemingly ordinary scenes from streets, cafés, markets and galleries, imbuing them with new meaning. His carefully considered compositions are infused with subtle irony, empathy and a keen sense of the absurdities of human behaviour.

Rather than focusing on major events, he turns his attention to small gestures, the atmosphere of places and the relationships between people, revealing the poetry of the everyday and the quiet humour of the contemporary world. His work is shaped by experiences gained through travel and by a life lived between Prague, Vienna and other corners of the world. Yet, above all, it remains a reflection on humanity, human encounters and the understated stories of everyday life.
