Šafránek’s work also reflects events from his personal life. His “Human Landscapes” of the 1970s depict the bleak years of the Czechoslovak normalisation period, against which he opposed himself by signing Charter 77. This ultimately led to his forced departure from Czechoslovakia.
This marked the beginning of his travels, during which he drew inspiration from many different sources, including popular folk celebrations, bars and street gatherings in places such as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Mexico and South America.
Šafránek mixes all the vivid colours he so fondly uses himself, reflecting his perfectionism and meticulous approach to painting, which are engagingly documented in the book.
