This catalogue was published on the occasion of Jaroslava Bičovská’s exhibition Ways of Summer, held at Nová síň Gallery, Voršilská 3, Prague 1, from 2 to 28 September 2014.

Jaroslava Bičovská was drawn to art from an early age, influenced by her mother, who was deeply immersed in it. From the beginning of her artistic career, Bičovská focused primarily on drawing and printmaking, skills she put to use in her first job at Vyšehrad Publishing House. There, she worked her way up to become a technical and art editor, while also beginning to illustrate her first books.

Over time, she devoted herself fully to painting, which she taught herself. Her early works tend towards darker tones, but after 2000 her colour palette underwent a transformation, shifting towards bright and even vivid colours.

Her most recent work includes small-scale watercolours and canvases. Many of her paintings vividly capture memories of her travels, while other recurring motifs draw on scenes from everyday life, such as Cups, Garden and Ikea I–II. As this catalogue demonstrates, Bičovská lends these seemingly ordinary subjects a distinctive and exceptional quality.
